Psychiatry for Portsmouth, VA: Evaluations and Medication Management Just Across the Chesapeake Line
Portsmouth is one of the oldest cities in Hampton Roads and one of the most underserved for outpatient psychiatry. South Chesapeake Psychiatry is a twenty-to-thirty-minute drive from Olde Towne, Churchland, and Cradock, and secure video visits are available anywhere in the city.
Every new client starts with a 60-minute psychiatric evaluation, followed by medication management with direct access to your provider. SPRAVATO® treatment for treatment-resistant depression is provided through TRIP, our insurance-supported interventional psychiatry service line.

Serving Portsmouth
Why Portsmouth Residents Choose South Chesapeake Psychiatry
Portsmouth is defined by Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and a large share of the city's adults are active-duty, retired military, shipyard workers, or married to one. Our founder spent twenty-two years in the Navy and our practice has a dedicated page for veterans and military families. For those who use the military health system but want a private evaluation outside it, or who are waiting on a referral, we are a practical alternative.
The concerns Portsmouth clients bring us most often are PTSD and sleep problems in current and former service members, depression and anxiety in shipyard and healthcare workers on rotating schedules, adult ADHD that was never evaluated, and treatment-resistant depression in people who have been on the same two medications for years without real improvement. Bon Secours Maryview provides hospital care in the city, but outpatient psychiatry with time to think is scarce.
We also hear from Portsmouth clients who value that we are a small, local practice rather than a national telehealth platform: the same provider every visit, a coordinator who knows your name, and a phone that gets answered.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions From Portsmouth Clients
Is there a South Chesapeake Psychiatry office in Portsmouth?
No. Our office is in the Edinburgh area of Chesapeake, about twenty to thirty minutes from most of Portsmouth. We serve Portsmouth residents in person there and by secure video anywhere in the city.
I get care at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. Can I still see you?
Yes. Many clients use us alongside or while waiting for military or VA care. With your permission we coordinate with your other providers so prescriptions and plans do not conflict. We are a private practice and not part of the military health system.
Do you accept TRICARE or Medicaid?
South Chesapeake Psychiatry is self-pay for evaluations and medication management and is not a network provider for those services; we provide superbills for out-of-network claims. SPRAVATO® treatment through TRIP is billed to insurance, and TRIP is in-network with nearly every major plan. The exception is TRICARE, which TRIP does not participate in; call us and we will talk through your options before you start.
How soon can I be seen?
We aim to schedule new evaluations within days. Call 757-908-2124 or use the online form and our client coordinator will confirm the earliest available time.
