Justin Ray on Inside Out: Support Before the Crisis
Justin Ray, MSN, PMHNP-BC, founder of South Chesapeake Psychiatry, was the guest on Inside Out: Mental Health at Work and in Life, a podcast from MHScot Workplace Wellbeing, a Scottish social enterprise focused on mental health in the workplace. The episode, “Talking a Good Game: Support Before the Crisis,” was released August 31, 2026. Justin draws on 22 years in the U.S. Navy, including 13 as a psychiatric technician, along with his private practice and community psychiatry work, to talk about why so many workplaces say the right things about mental health but don’t follow through.
What They Talked About
- Talking a good game. Many workplaces encourage people to speak up when they’re struggling, then judge them when they do. Justin’s phrase for it: talking a good game without acting a good game.
- Support before the crisis. Why help should arrive early, not after someone has reached a breaking point. If you’ve noticed changes in your own mood, sleep, or focus, our free psychiatric screening tool is a private place to start.
- Autonomy matched to the person. Giving each person the independence they can carry, with room to step back and try again without it counting against them.
- Asking the right people. Why the most senior voice in a field isn’t always the one closest to the work, and why the expert view belongs alongside someone doing the job today.
- One-mistake cultures. Running a process well 99 times, getting it wrong once, and scrapping the whole thing, when adjusting the process would have been enough.
- Reflection in lean workplaces. When people are doing two jobs, time to think is the first thing to go. Related: She Quit at the Top: Burnout, Agency, and What Recovery Actually Looks Like.
- Street psychiatry. How an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team goes to people with serious mental illness instead of waiting for them to come to a clinic, and why everyday barriers like transportation often matter most. Justin goes deeper on ACT in his Holding It Together (Kinda) interview, and our article on first-break psychosis explains why early treatment matters.
- AI and critical thinking. Where AI helps, where it just adds to the pile, and why the best answer is rarely the only one.
Veterans, service members, and their families can learn about our veterans and military family psychiatry services. Justin writes about psychiatry every week in The Neuropsychiatry Brief on LinkedIn. You can also listen to the full episode on Podcast.co.
